3 Days Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga Overview
Day 1: Pick up and drive to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Depart Kigali in reasonable time, and head to the very South Western corner of Uganda, driving for about 4 – 4.5 hours from Rwanda’s capital – Kigali. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is located amidst the Virunga mountain range – a famous chain of 8 mountains that span Uganda, Rwanda and D.R. Congo.
The park is famous for its huge black apes and also offers outstanding trekking expeditions on her three extinct volcanoes. The journey traverses Rwanda’s northern region and enter Uganda through Cyanika / Kisoro border. If you arrive early enough, you can take a short community tour in the evening to experience the culture and traditions of the natives, especially the Batwa pygmies. Check in at your lodge for relaxation, supper and slumber awaiting the next day’s big adventure.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga
Right after your ultimate breakfast, proceed to the ranger station at Ntebeko for a pre-trek briefing regarding dos and don’ts of gorilla trekking. Immediately begin the hike through verdant jungle in search of the endangered mountain gorillas. Some amount of physical fitness is required during this activity since it involves ascending and descending down hills and steep rocky and boggy jungles. The gorilla experience is tedious though worth-while when you finally meet face to face with the Mountain Gorillas.
You’ll find them well composed in a family setting as they go about their day-to-day routine; mothers caring for the babies, infants playing, feeding while the gigantic Silverback offers ultimate protection to the entire protection. You are required to maintain a reasonable distance while you watch them, make sure to turn off the flash of your camera as you capture images /videos.
The Gorilla trekking expedition can take between two to six hours, depending on the movement of gorillas. Immediately after trekking, head back to the starting point, meet your driver / guide who will drive back to the lodge for relaxation. Based on the time and your energy, you will have a nature walk to see the beautiful crater lakes in the region as well as an evening cultural walk to interact with the local people. Get entertained by these local people with their traditional performances and conservation songs, an amazing way to end the day.
Day 3: Transfer to Kigali
After breakfast, relax a bit at the lodge and later drive back to Kigali. Arrive in time for your flight or you can stopover at a couple of craft shops to buy a souvenir or two. Proceed to the airport for your departure flight, marking the end of this 3 day tour to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
