This 3 days Nyiragongo hiking expedition exclusively brings you close to D.R. Congo’s most spectacular volcano. Nyiragongo comfortably sits in the eastern region, North Kivu province with stunning views of the entire Virunga range, plus the Lava Lake that has found a permanent position on top of Nyiragongo since the 2002 eruption. Nyiragongo hiking expedition begins and ends in Kigali, and it will ultimately turn out to be one of the most adventurous African safaris you have ever experienced.
3 Days Nyiragongo Hike Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Goma in Congo
Welcome to Kigali! The home of cleanliness and warm people! Upon landing, meet and greet with our company representative who’ll be waiting at the arrival lounge. Head out for a brief city tour in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital. Kigali is a city to behold! Enjoy spectacular sighting of some prominent and historical buildings, towering sky scrapers, museums, craft markets, cuisine, monuments, etc.
After the city excursion, immediately begin your journey to D.R. Congo, via Gisenyi and cross via Goma border. You can have an Enroute lunch in Gisenyi town, located on the shores of Lake Kivu – Rwanda’s largest fresh water lake. Cross over to D.R. Congo, and drive to Goma town or to Virunga national park to check in at the lodge, have dinner and relaxation in preparation for the next big day.
Day 2: Ascend Mount Nyiragongo
Have breakfast as early as 6:00am as you prepare for the upcoming day’s adventure. At the base camp of Nyiragongo, you will have a simple briefing about the hike and also get a walking stick to help you throughout the hike. Hiking Nyiragongo Volcano is not for the faint hearted as it involves walking up on slippery as well as rough terrain. However, the hike becomes easily navigable by the presence of a well-constructed trail on the way to the top of the world’s most active volcano, this is probably the most challenging, though rewarding hike one can ever undertake.
Venturing to Nyiragongo’s top is purely magical and worth every step of the climb taken! Watch the world’s largest lava crater lake, forming into a spider web-like structure, the view becomes more beautiful as night sets in. Spending a night at the one of Africa’s most active volcanoes that last erupted in 2016 is extremely adventurous. While at the top you have striking views of Gisenyi town, Lake Kivu and other Virunga mountains, notably Mount Nyamuragira, Visoke (Bisoke), Sabyinyo and others.
Day 3: Descend Nyiragongo and transfer to Kigali
In the morning, have breakfast from the mountain huts perched on the edge of Nyiragongo Mountain with scenic views of the lava lake and the lower mountain slopes. Trek back to the mountain base, meet with your driver guide who will drive back to Goma boarder, cross into Rwanda and then continue to Kigali town, via picturesque Lake Kivu, Congo-Nile trail, endless views of tea plantations and rolling hills. Reach Kigali in the evening, your driver will drop you off at the airport to catch your departure flight.
