4 Days Gorillas & Golden Monkeys Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
You will be met and warmly greeted by one of our experienced driver/guide at Kigali International airport – proceed to a restaurant for a relaxed cup of coffee as the guide briefs you about the safari and what to expect. Drive at leisure to the northern based Volcanoes national park. This is a famous park, notable for sheltering the endangered mountain gorillas and lies within the Virunga region.
Take a walk in the evening to explore the amazing Iby’iwacu cultural village. This is a living museum on the outskirts of Volcanoes national park, which unveils the typical lifestyle and traditions of Rwandan people of both ancient and present. It’s an encounter that you will completely get immersed into, and you will love the joy and excitement that the Rwandan culture brings. Overnight stay at your lodge on the periphery of Volcanoes national park.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Encounter
After breakfast at your lodge, head to the Volcanoes national park ranger station for briefing by head ranger then drive to the trail head for the start of your amazing Gorilla Tracking adventure. Porters can be hired at the briefing point to help carry your backpack and trekking gear. Your trek again starts in the cultivated foothills of the Virunga’s offering stunning views in every turn. Upon sighting the gorillas, you will stay with them for a magical hour as they go about their daily life, feeding, playing, resting and caring for their young ones.
Trek back to the starting point, meet with your guide who will drive you back to the lodge for lunch and spend the rest of the day relaxing and meditating about this magical adventure. Alternatively, you can go for an optional tour to Musanze caves or hike to the Dian Fossey grave.
Day 3: Golden Monkey Trekking
After a morning breakfast you will go trekking the Golden Monkey in the Volcano National Park. Trekking to see the golden monkeys is another highlight of Volcanoes National Park, apart from gorilla trekking. The Golden Monkey (Cercopithecus Mitis Kandti) is a local subspecies of the widespread Sykes Monkey, also referred to as the “Blue Monkey” and is unique to the alpine forests of the Virunga massif, primarily inhabiting Mgahinga gorilla national park and Volcanoes National Park in Uganda and Rwanda respectively.
The golden monkeys are naturally shy, playful and inquisitive and often spend their time leaping from bamboo branches or frolicking on the forest floor. There are two habituated troops of Golden Monkeys in Volcanoes National park, one troop has a total of 80 – 100 members and inhabits the foot of Mt Sabyinyo. Just like treks to see the Mountain Gorillas, treks to see Golden Monkeys also happen in the mornings, at 8:00am and travelers are allowed to stay for 1 hour with these rare monkeys. After the Golden monkey trekking adventure, go back to your lodge for lunch. In afternoon visit the Twin lakes- Ruhondo and Bulera; the two scenic lakes that lie on the foothills of Virunga Mountains.
Day 4: Transfer to Kigali & Departure
Breakfast at the lodge, and depart from foothills of the Virungas and transfer on a scenic drive back to Kigali city. Take an optional city tour, to explore Rwanda’s unique attractions, including the Genocide museum in Gisozi, historical monuments, presidential palace museum and some shopping at Kigali craft market. Transfer to the airport for your departure flight. An evening flight after 1800 hrs is recommended.
