It’s a 4-5 hours’ drive but with much to keep your eyes busy on the rolling landscapes, undulating terrains and bustling towns full of life. Continue to Rushaga sector of Bwindi and arrive in the evening to check in at your lodge.
Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking
On this day, wake up for early breakfast and with your trekking gear, packed lunch, bottled water and some snacks, leave the lodge and transfer to Ruhija briefing point to join other trekkers. At the briefing, you will be organized into a group of eight persons and each assigned to a specific gorilla family. Thereafter, head to the jungles, led by an experienced gorilla tracking guide as you search for a family of mountain gorillas. Gorillas tend to prefer the deepest and most remote parts of the forest, and so one has to trek all the way to the point where they are.
This trekking experience lasts between 1 hour and 8 hours, depending on how far the Mountain Gorillas have moved. Once you find them, spend one hour taking pictures/videos, and learning more about their behaviors as explained by the ranger guide. Transfer back to the lodge and spend the rest of the evening reflecting about this great adventure.
Day 3: Transfer to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
This morning, leave Ruhija and head for Kisoro, via Kisoro – Kabale highway, passing through the curvy highlands of Kisoro, lush vegetation, terraced farmlands, Echuya forest reserve marked with a myriad of primates including vervet monkeys, olive baboons, etc. all these will grace your journey until you reach Kisoro.
You will be welcomed to Kisoro by the towering smoky triplet volcanoes – Muhabura, Sabyinyo and Gahinga mountains. These form part of the larger Virunga chain of mountains. Check in at your lodge, have lunch and a little bit of relaxation, until late in the evening. Take a stroll through the neighboring native communities notably the Batwa to explore their ways of life, history, cuisine, and traditional dances.
Day 4: Golden Monkey Trekking & Transfer to Kigali
Have a morning breakfast, and transfer to the briefing point. After briefing, head off to the forest with your guide who will lead to where these rare golden monkeys are located. The golden monkeys are some of the most endangered and elusive primate species, endemic to the foothills of Virunga ranges, in Volcanoes national park in Rwanda as well as Mgahinga gorilla national park in Uganda. Once you meet them, spend at most one hour of interaction, photography and the guide will explain their way of life, family composition and conservation status.
Retreat from this activity, have lunch and immediately depart Mgahinga national park for Kigali. This is scenic journey from Kisoro district to Kigali City with several stopovers made occasionally to capture a picture or admire breathtaking landscapes. Arrive in Kigali during early hours of the evening, and the tour ends with a drop off at your preferred hotel or at Kigali Airport (if your flight is for this evening).
