6 Days Triple Gorilla Trekking & Golden Monkey Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

The 6 days triple gorilla trekking tour begins after breakfast in Kigali. Meet and greet with the guide, who will take you through details of the itinerary and about the entire trip. Thereafter depart Kigali for the northern part of the country via Volcanoes National park. The park lies in the foothills of the Virunga ranges (the 8 volcanic mountains that span Uganda, Rwanda and D. R. C).

The journey takes approximately 4 -5 hours. On the way you will see the blossoming green countryside, traditional homesteads and extensive farmlands. Admire the scenic allure of the rolling hills with striking vantage points, typical of northern Rwanda. Cross to Uganda via Katuna border and lunch will be in Kabale town. Continue to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Ruhija sector arriving at your reserved lodge in the evening.

Day 2: Ruhija Gorilla Trekking & Transfer to Rushaga

You will have an early breakfast and later be driven to Ruhija ranger headquarters for briefing (about the rules on Gorilla tracking) at 7:30am. You will be allocated a Gorilla family to track and guides to lead you to the Gorillas. The tracking will be a 2-5 hour exercise after which you will be returned to the lodge for lunch. You will later in the afternoon be transferred to the far south of Bwindi – in Rushaga region. This is the biggest region with the highest number of gorilla families and the only place where gorilla habituation can be done. You will return to your hotel for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Rushaga Gorilla Trekking & Transfer to Nkuringo

Gorilla trekking in Rushaga sector begins in the morning where the trackers assemble at the park headquarters for briefing ahead of the trek. Pre-trek briefing goes for about 30 minutes and by 8:00am, the actual gorilla trekking begins. Gorilla trek requires some average level of physical and health fitness since its quite challenging characterized by hiking in the steep jungles, valleys and lush vegetation.

The duration of tracking could be 2 hours, 4 hours or a day since it is dependent on the location of the mountain gorillas and their daily movements. Ensure you have adequate drinking water, insect repellants, rain jackets, water proof cameras, packed lunch and any other equipment that you may be advised to have. This is an amazing adventure, as you trek through the forests and listen to the beautiful sound of birds, monkeys, and other forest animals, something memorable! Return to the lodge just in time to transfer to the far south of Bwindi, in Nkuringo region.

Day 4: Gorilla Trekking in Nkuringo & Evening Batwa Community Walk

Early morning breakfast at your lodge and head to Nkuringo ranger station, join other guests in a briefing (on gorilla trekking rules) and by 8:00am, begin your gorilla trek. You will hike through thick creepers and undergrowth, together with your ranger guides until you find the mighty mountain gorillas. The trek can take between 1-8 hours depending on the season and movement of gorillas. The steeply forested landscape of Nkuringo area is irresistibly dense but crisscrossed by many animal trails, somewhat easing access for trekkers.

Upon sighting the gorillas, you are allowed only one hour to stay with them, learn about their behaviors, history, day – to – day life and transfer back to the lodge after the experience. In the evening, move to the nearby Batwa communities for a sunset performance presented by the Batwa people; these are people who are historically known as the people of the forest as they inhabited the interior jungles of Bwindi, together with other primates, birds and gorillas themselves. Overnight stay and dinner at a lodge in Kisoro town.

Day 5: Golden Monkey Experience in Mgahinga

Just like gorilla trekking, golden monkey habituation begins at 7:30am for briefing (about the dos and don’ts of visiting the golden monkeys). The actual experience commences at 8:00am. Trekking through the jungles to sight the golden monkeys is not so hectic like gorilla trekking because golden monkeys inhabit the lower mountain ranges.

Golden Monkey Habituation experience allows visitors to be with these shy apes for up to 4 hours. Visitors get the unique chance to get close to these little primates, take photographs and study their behavior in their natural habitat. A unique experience that will enhance your primate safari in Uganda. Golden monkey habituation experience has no minimum number of tourists who track each group and age limit is 12 years. Return to the lodge just in time for lunch, relax in the afternoon as you meditate about this incredible experience. In the evening you may opt to for guided cave tour and walk to the Garama cave which is 342 meters long and 14 deep. It’s one of the caves where the Batwa lived and fought their enemies, the Bantu, though it’s now inhabited by bats. Return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 6: Transfer to Kigali

After breakfast at your lodge in Kisoro / Mgahinga national park; you will be driven back to Kigali with stopovers enroute to enjoy the scenery of lush landscapes, covered with tea, coffee and banana plantations. Upon arrival in Kigali, have the opportunity to do some shopping for souvenirs in Kigali craft market before catching your outbound flight to mark the end of your 6 Days Uganda Gorillas & Golden Monkey Tour.
