Detailed 4-Day Double Gorilla Trekking Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
On arrival at Kigali Airport, clear customs and collect your baggage. A representative will meet you and brief you on the safari ahead.
Have a cup of coffee after the flight, then transfer north to Volcanoes National Park. You’ll go directly to your hotel to check in and have lunch.
After lunch, take a drive to the base of Mount Muhabura, home to the Twin Lakes. The tour of Burera and Ruhondo takes in their calm green waters, framed by dense vegetation.
The visit gives you views of Rwanda’s landscape, wetland habitat, the Virunga range, water birds, and local communities, along with several attractions shared with neighboring Uganda and the DRC. Overnight stay at your lodge on the edge of Volcanoes National Park.
Day 2: First Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
After an early breakfast, transfer to Volcanoes National Park headquarters to join your group for the pre-trek briefing.
The trek follows the mountain gorilla, the largest living primate, through the cultivated foothills of the Virungas, home to other wildlife including buffalo and elephants.
The forest is alive with bird calls, butterflies, and other primates, including monkeys and baboons. Despite being among the highest mountains in Africa, the Virungas remain accessible for trekking.
Once you find the gorillas, you get an hour with them, watching them feed, play, rest, and care for their young. An up-close encounter with a silverback ranks among the most memorable wildlife experiences available anywhere.
Afterward, trek back to the starting point, where your guide will drive you back to the hotel for a shower and lunch. Spend the afternoon resting and reflecting on the day.
Day 3: Second Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Have another early breakfast, then transfer to Volcanoes National Park headquarters to join your group for the 7:00 am briefing ahead of your second trek.
In the afternoon, visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, also known as the Ex-Poachers Village, a conservation initiative where former poachers were encouraged to give up poaching and take up conservation work instead.
Alongside their families, they built this community village, which includes a replica of the King’s Palace and offers an interactive look at Rwandan culture and traditions, suited to all ages.
Day 4: Visit Musanze Caves and Transfer to Kigali
Take an early morning tour of Musanze Caves, historic caves on the edge of Musanze known for their age and resident bat colonies.
Return to the lodge for coffee, check out, and drive to Kigali. On arrival, take a city tour that includes the Genocide Memorial at Gisozi, a stop to see local artisan work such as bracelets and other crafts, and shopping at Kigali Craft Market, before transferring to Kigali International Airport for your onward flight.
