Detailed 4-Day Rwanda Gorilla Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Akagera National Park

After a relaxed breakfast at your hotel or an airport pickup, your safari guide will collect you for a short Kigali city excursion before departing for Akagera National Park.

The drive to Akagera takes about 2 to 3 hours, depending on stops along the way.

The route passes strong scenery, so feel free to ask your guide for photo stops.

On arrival, take an optional evening game drive, then check in to your lodge for the overnight stay.

Day 2: Game Drive and Boat Cruise

Have breakfast, then leave the lodge for a game drive through the northern section of Akagera, past Mutumba Hill, with views extending toward Tanzania.

The drive covers both woodland and open savannah, with chances to see elephants, buffalo, Maasai giraffe, birds, lions, and several antelope species.

In the afternoon, take a boat cruise on Lake Ihema, lasting up to 2 hours, with sightings of water animals, reptiles, and birds along the shore.

Day 3: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park, Evening Community Tour

Have breakfast and check out of the lodge for the drive to Volcanoes National Park, about 4 hours through Rwanda’s hills. Have lunch along the way, and check in to your accommodation on arrival.

In the evening, visit the Iby’Iwacu Village, one of the few places to learn about the culture of Rwanda’s three groups: the Hutu, Tutsi, and Twa.

The visit covers traditional performances, cuisine, and daily life, giving insight into Rwandan customs and history.

Day 4: Gorilla Trekking and Transfer to Kigali

After breakfast, head to park headquarters for a briefing on trekking guidelines, then get assigned your ranger guide and gorilla family. Enter the forest to begin the search for the gorillas.

Each gorilla family is visited by no more than 8 people per day. Once you find them, you get one hour to observe their behavior.

Afterward, return to the lodge by 2:00 pm for refreshments and lunch, then depart for Kigali.

Depending on your flight time, you’ll be dropped at the airport, marking the end of your 4-Day Rwanda Gorilla and Wildlife Safari.
