Kabale Town is the headquarters of Kabale District in southwestern Uganda, sometimes nicknamed “Kastone,” meaning “a small stone” in the local Rukiga language. The district borders Rubanda to the south, Kanungu to the northwest, Rukiga to the north, and Rukungiri to the west.

Getting to Kabale

Kabale sits about 420km from Kampala, roughly a 6-hour drive, and about 3 hours from Kigali, Rwanda. A flight to Kabale takes 30 to 45 minutes, while the road trip from Kampala or Entebbe generally runs 6 to 7 hours. According to the 2014 census, the town had around 49,667 residents, with a growth rate of at least 4% a year, making it one of Uganda’s faster-growing towns.

Why Visit Kabale

Kabale and the surrounding area are known for cool weather, terraced hillsides, and a genuinely warm welcome from local residents. The town also serves as a convenient base for exploring several nearby attractions across the wider Kigezi region.

Attractions in and Around Kabale

Lake Bunyonyi

Lake Bunyonyi sits about 8km outside Kabale town, between Kabale and Rubanda districts, in the misty Kigezi highlands. It’s sometimes cited as Africa’s second deepest lake, though this figure has never been formally confirmed. Activities on the lake include canoeing, birding, cultural encounters, swimming, hiking, and a visit to traditional healer Sam Mulisa.

Kisiizi Falls

Kisiizi Falls sits along the Kyabamba River, straddling Kabale and Rukungiri districts within the Kigezi highlands. Birders can look for species like the grey heron, pied crow, and turaco, while the falls themselves make for good photography against the surrounding green landscape. Nearby forest pockets offer short walks, and visitors can also learn about the culture of the local Bakiga people.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

About 2 hours from Kabale in Kisoro District, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offers gorilla trekking, volcano hiking, Batwa cultural encounters, and birding, with species including the black kite, white-necked raven, and speckled mousebird. Golden monkey trekking is also available here, one of the few places in the region to see this species.

Great Lakes Museum

Located in Muhanga, between the plains of Ntungamo and the hills of Rukiga (formerly part of Kabale district), this museum holds artifacts documenting the history of the various clans that have inhabited western and southern Uganda. It sits directly on the highway route into Kabale from Kampala, making it an easy stop along the way.

Caves and Scenic Rocks

Kabale’s caves were historically used as hiding places by local warriors, and remain notable landmarks today. Nyakagera Cave, on Kabaraga Hill near town, is one of the more accessible examples.

Where to Stay

Luxury options include Bird Nest Resort, White Horse Inn, and Arcadia Cottages. Mid-range choices include Summit Safari Lodge on Muhanga Hills, Bunyonyi Safaris Resort, Bunyonyi Eco Resort, and Riverside Hotel. Budget travelers can consider Cephas’ Inn, Green Hills Hotel, or Engagi Guest House.

From Lake Bunyonyi to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Kabale Town makes a solid base for exploring the wider Kigezi region. Book your Kabale trip with our team today, and we’ll help you plan lake activities, gorilla trekking, and accommodation around your trip.
