A gorilla trekking and Serengeti safari combo brings together two of East Africa’s most iconic wildlife experiences: the Big Five and the wildebeest migration in Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, and a face-to-face encounter with endangered mountain gorillas in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park or Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It’s one of the most requested combinations for travelers visiting the region, though figuring out where to start, how to get between the two, and where to stay can feel complicated without some guidance.

Why Start in the Serengeti

For this kind of trip, it generally makes sense to start in Tanzania. The Serengeti is one of the most recognized names in African safari travel, and for good reason: game drives here regularly bring visitors within close range of the Big Five, along with hippos, warthogs, antelope, and dozens of other species, often within the first hour of a drive.

The park’s biggest draw, though, is the wildebeest migration, often described as one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on the planet. Close to 1.5 million wildebeest move through the Serengeti ecosystem each year, following the rains toward Kenya’s Maasai Mara in search of fresh grazing and water. Timing your Serengeti leg around the migration adds a layer of scale and drama to the trip that a standard game drive can’t quite match, though the park delivers excellent wildlife viewing throughout the year regardless of migration timing.

Getting from Serengeti to Rwanda

Once your Serengeti days are done, a direct flight connects Tanzania to Rwanda, cutting out what would otherwise be a long and impractical overland journey between the two countries. This makes it realistic to move from big-game plains to gorilla forest within the same trip, without losing days to transit.

Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park, in Rwanda’s Northern Province, sits within the Virunga range shared by Rwanda, Uganda, and DR Congo, and is the main reason most visitors come to this part of the park system, ahead of the park’s golden monkeys, which draw a smaller but dedicated following of their own. The park is home to 12 habituated gorilla families available for daily trekking.

Trekking here means walking through thick jungle on slippery trails in search of a gorilla family, before spending an hour observing them once found, watching a silverback keep watch over the group while younger gorillas move through the surrounding trees. It’s a physically demanding activity, and trekkers should be reasonably fit and in good health beforehand, since mountain gorillas are highly susceptible to common human illnesses like flu, coughs, and stomach bugs. Anyone feeling unwell on the day of their trek is asked not to participate, both for their own comfort and for the safety of the gorillas.

Beyond Gorilla Trekking

Volcanoes National Park offers more than gorilla trekking alone. Golden monkey tracking is a popular add-on for travelers who want a second primate encounter without the same physical demands as a gorilla trek. The nearby Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village gives visitors a look at Rwandan traditions, dance, and storytelling, and a short Kigali city tour is an easy way to round out the Rwanda leg of the trip before heading home or on to another destination.

Travelers with more time can also continue by road from Rwanda into Uganda, adding gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park to the itinerary for a second gorilla trekking experience in a different setting, or simply as a way to see more of the wider Virunga region beyond Rwanda’s side of the border.

Planning the Logistics

Because this itinerary spans two countries and several protected areas, working with an established tour operator makes a meaningful difference. A good operator handles permit bookings, flight connections, and lodge arrangements, and can adjust the order of activities based on migration timing, gorilla permit availability, and your own schedule. Before booking with any operator, it’s worth checking their track record, how responsive they are to questions, their payment and cancellation policies, and the experience level of the guides they employ, since your guide has a real impact on how smoothly the trip actually goes.

Putting Together Your Itinerary

A well-paced gorilla trekking and Serengeti safari itinerary typically runs at least a week, allowing enough time in the Serengeti for multiple game drives and a couple of days around Volcanoes National Park for the gorilla trek itself, plus any add-on activities like golden monkey tracking or a cultural visit. Because gorilla permits are limited and often booked months in advance, it’s worth locking in your Rwanda dates early and building the Tanzania portion of the trip around them.

I had an amazing 4 day trip , with magical gorillas. The driver muzwhei was amazing from start to finish, ensuring a safe journey, amazing conversation and knowledge that he shared, and ensuring I saw things I enjoyed along the way ! The lodgings were amazing and the treks with both the gorillas and golden monkey were a once in a lifetime opportunity ! I also participated in the additional options of the batwya people and boat cruise on lake bunyonyi which were both great ! Consider magical gorillas of your in need of a trek or safari !

Happy Travels

I recently traveled to Uganda with Magical Gorillas, and it was an outstanding experience from start to finish. Our tour guides, Eddie and Collins, were exceptional. They were knowledgeable, professional, friendly, and always went the extra mile to ensure everything ran smoothly. The transportation was comfortable throughout the trip, and the drivers were safe and reliable, which made the long drives between destinations very enjoyable. The tour was delivered exactly as outlined in the itinerary, with no unexpected changes or hidden costs. Everything was well organized, and the accommodations exceeded our expectations. The lodges were of a very high standard, and the food at each location was excellent. The highlights of the trip were undoubtedly the chimpanzee and mountain gorilla trekking experiences, both of which were unforgettable. The boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel was another standout, offering incredible wildlife viewing in a beautiful setting. Overall, I would highly recommend Magical Gorillas to anyone considering a safari or wildlife adventure in Uganda. They delivered a seamless, high-quality experience that exceeded our expectations.

The only bad thing about our trip with Eddie was that it was only two days and not longer. But boy, did we have a great time on those two days! Magical Gorilla Adventures chose an idyllic lodge for us, Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge, and a wonderful restaurant for lunch on our second day, the Bird's Nest. We enjoyed the Batwa Cultural Walk and the boat trip on Lake Bonyonyi very much. Needless to say, the highlight of our trip was the time we spent with the gorilla family. They put on a great show for us, especially the baby. A dream come true! Thank you, Magical Gorilla Adventures, for this truly magical experience. And thank you so much, Eddie, for not only providing us with the smoothest trip, but also for being so friendly and funny and for making the car rides very interesting and enjoyable!

During our journey through East Africa (specifically Rwanda), we also wanted to see the gorillas. We decided in advance to visit the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, partly because it is located not far from Kigali, but also because we were keen to make a side trip into Uganda. Having completed our tour of Rwanda as self-drivers, we decided to hire a professional tour operator for the trip to Bwindi—someone familiar with local conditions who would allow us to focus on enjoying the region's highlights rather than on the logistics. We compared various providers for this purpose and ultimately chose Magical Gorilla Adventures. Looking back, we can say that this was an excellent decision. Communication with their team was seamless via WhatsApp. It was important to us to include a visit to the local Batwa community alongside the gorilla trekking—a request that was immediately granted. Furthermore, they even added a boat trip on Lake Bunyonyi to the itinerary. From the very first day of the trip, everything ran flawlessly. Our driver and guide, Eddie, picked us up at our hotel in Kigali and drove us across the border to our (truly stunning) lodge near the Bwindi Forest. The tour of the Batwa community, the gorilla trekking the following morning, the boat trip, and finally the return journey to Kigali were all perfectly organized; we did not have to worry about a single thing—neither in advance nor once we were on site. These were incomparably beautiful days in Uganda—highlighted, of course, by the opportunity to see the mountain gorillas—and both the organization by Magical Gorilla Adventures and Eddie’s friendly, helpful demeanor were of the very highest standard. We look forward to traveling to this wonderful region again someday, and when we do, we will certainly choose Magical Gorilla Adventures once more.
