The best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda depends on what you want from your trip: the dry season for clearer trails and easier sightings, or the rainy season for smaller groups and better rates. Understanding when to visit Uganda and Rwanda more broadly, not just for gorilla trekking, helps you plan a trip that fits your priorities, whether that’s wildlife viewing across multiple parks, birding, or simply avoiding crowds.

Best Time to Visit Uganda and Rwanda

Across both countries, the best months to visit are January, February, June, July, August, September, and December, which make up the dry season. During these months, rainfall drops off, sometimes stopping altogether, which makes wildlife easier to view across the board, not just on a gorilla trek. Vegetation in savanna parks like Queen Elizabeth National Park shortens, roads dry out and become easier to drive, and animals tend to move less during the heat of the day, gathering under tree shade where they’re easier to spot.

This is also the busiest travel period, so demand for gorilla and chimpanzee permits rises sharply during these months, and both countries see their highest visitor numbers. If you’re planning a broader Uganda and Rwanda itinerary that combines gorilla trekking with savanna game drives, birding, or cultural experiences, timing your trip to the dry season generally makes logistics easier across every stop on your route.

Uganda’s Climate and Seasons

Uganda sits on the equator and has a modified equatorial climate with two rainy seasons each year. During heavy rains, forest trails become slippery and some gorilla trekking areas are harder to reach without a four-wheel-drive vehicle. Despite this, Uganda’s climate stays comfortable and mild year-round compared to many other safari destinations, which is part of why gorilla trekking here is possible in every month. Due to climate change, seasonal patterns in Uganda and Rwanda have become less predictable in recent years, so it’s worth packing a rain jacket, sturdy boots, and warm clothing no matter when you travel.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda: Dry Season

Uganda’s dry season, and gorilla trekking high season, runs from June to September and December to early February. This is the most popular time to trek, since trails are clearer and less slippery, there’s a lower chance of rain interrupting your hike, and gorillas tend to roam more freely in search of food, making them easier to spot. Clear skies also mean better lighting for photography, with less fog and mist obscuring the forest canopy.

You’ll also trek alongside a fuller group, up to the maximum of 8 people per gorilla family, which some travelers find more enjoyable and reassuring on steep, unclear trails. If you’re combining gorilla trekking with other Uganda highlights, such as chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest or game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park, the dry season makes travel between parks considerably smoother, since many rural roads become difficult to navigate once the rains set in.

Gorilla Trekking in Uganda’s Rainy Season

Uganda’s rainy, low season runs from March to May and October to November. Gorillas tend to stay closer to accessible food sources during this period, which can actually make them easier to locate despite the wetter trails. Trekking groups are also much smaller, sometimes as few as two visitors plus a ranger, compared to groups of up to 8 in high season, which gives you a more relaxed, personal experience with your guide.

Permits are easier to secure in the low season too. High-season permits often need to be booked 3 to 6 months in advance, while low-season permits can sometimes be bought on arrival. Uganda currently offers a discounted low-season permit at $600, down from the standard $800, for treks in April, May, and November. Accommodation rates also tend to drop across the country during this period, and popular add-ons like the Batwa cultural encounter or visits to Lake Bunyonyi and Lake Mutanda are easier to book since fewer travelers are competing for spots. Local souvenir prices tend to ease up as well, since artisans see fewer buyers during the quieter months.

Best Time to Visit Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi began as a crown forest reserve in 1932, was declared a gorilla sanctuary in 1964, and became a full national park in 1991. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. The park covers about 298 square kilometers and is split into four trekking regions: Buhoma in the north, Ruhija in the east, Rushaga in the southeast, and Nkuringo in the south, each offering a slightly different trekking experience and landscape.

Daytime temperatures in Bwindi range from 22 to 26 degrees Celsius, dropping to around 11 degrees at night, so warm layers for the evening are worth packing alongside your trekking gear. The best months to visit are June to August and December to mid-February, matching Uganda’s dry season, though the wetter months of March to April and September to November are actually the best time for birding, since migratory species pass through the forest during these windows.

Bwindi is one of Africa’s top birding destinations, with more than 350 recorded species, including 24 Albertine Rift endemics such as the northern double-collared sunbird, Chapin’s flycatcher, Shelley’s crimson-wing, and the African green broadbill. Beyond gorilla trekking and birding, visitors can join Batwa and Bakiga cultural experiences, learning about forest life before the Batwa were resettled outside the park, or hike the Munyanga River trail from Buhoma to a series of forest waterfalls, passing black-and-white colobus monkeys and orchids along the way.

Best Time to Visit Rwanda for Gorilla Trekking

Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park follows a similar seasonal pattern to Uganda, with the driest and most popular trekking months falling between June and September and December and February. Outside these windows, the Virunga volcanoes see more rainfall, and trails through the bamboo and montane forest can be steep and muddy. Even so, Volcanoes National Park’s relatively compact size means trekking distances are often shorter than in Bwindi, so rain has less impact on the overall length of a trek.

Travelers planning a combined Uganda and Rwanda itinerary should note that both countries share roughly the same dry and rainy periods, which makes it straightforward to time a single trip around one gorilla trekking season rather than juggling two different calendars.

What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking

Regardless of season, pack a waterproof rain jacket, sturdy hiking boots with ankle support, a long-sleeved shirt and trousers to protect against thorny vegetation, gardening gloves, a hat, insect repellent, and at least 1.5 liters of drinking water. In the rainy season, waterproof trousers and a dry bag for your camera and electronics are worth the extra weight, while dry-season trekkers should prioritize sun protection alongside their standard gear.

I had an amazing 4 day trip , with magical gorillas. The driver muzwhei was amazing from start to finish, ensuring a safe journey, amazing conversation and knowledge that he shared, and ensuring I saw things I enjoyed along the way ! The lodgings were amazing and the treks with both the gorillas and golden monkey were a once in a lifetime opportunity ! I also participated in the additional options of the batwya people and boat cruise on lake bunyonyi which were both great ! Consider magical gorillas of your in need of a trek or safari !

Happy Travels

I recently traveled to Uganda with Magical Gorillas, and it was an outstanding experience from start to finish. Our tour guides, Eddie and Collins, were exceptional. They were knowledgeable, professional, friendly, and always went the extra mile to ensure everything ran smoothly. The transportation was comfortable throughout the trip, and the drivers were safe and reliable, which made the long drives between destinations very enjoyable. The tour was delivered exactly as outlined in the itinerary, with no unexpected changes or hidden costs. Everything was well organized, and the accommodations exceeded our expectations. The lodges were of a very high standard, and the food at each location was excellent. The highlights of the trip were undoubtedly the chimpanzee and mountain gorilla trekking experiences, both of which were unforgettable. The boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel was another standout, offering incredible wildlife viewing in a beautiful setting. Overall, I would highly recommend Magical Gorillas to anyone considering a safari or wildlife adventure in Uganda. They delivered a seamless, high-quality experience that exceeded our expectations.

The only bad thing about our trip with Eddie was that it was only two days and not longer. But boy, did we have a great time on those two days! Magical Gorilla Adventures chose an idyllic lodge for us, Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge, and a wonderful restaurant for lunch on our second day, the Bird's Nest. We enjoyed the Batwa Cultural Walk and the boat trip on Lake Bonyonyi very much. Needless to say, the highlight of our trip was the time we spent with the gorilla family. They put on a great show for us, especially the baby. A dream come true! Thank you, Magical Gorilla Adventures, for this truly magical experience. And thank you so much, Eddie, for not only providing us with the smoothest trip, but also for being so friendly and funny and for making the car rides very interesting and enjoyable!

During our journey through East Africa (specifically Rwanda), we also wanted to see the gorillas. We decided in advance to visit the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, partly because it is located not far from Kigali, but also because we were keen to make a side trip into Uganda. Having completed our tour of Rwanda as self-drivers, we decided to hire a professional tour operator for the trip to Bwindi—someone familiar with local conditions who would allow us to focus on enjoying the region's highlights rather than on the logistics. We compared various providers for this purpose and ultimately chose Magical Gorilla Adventures. Looking back, we can say that this was an excellent decision. Communication with their team was seamless via WhatsApp. It was important to us to include a visit to the local Batwa community alongside the gorilla trekking—a request that was immediately granted. Furthermore, they even added a boat trip on Lake Bunyonyi to the itinerary. From the very first day of the trip, everything ran flawlessly. Our driver and guide, Eddie, picked us up at our hotel in Kigali and drove us across the border to our (truly stunning) lodge near the Bwindi Forest. The tour of the Batwa community, the gorilla trekking the following morning, the boat trip, and finally the return journey to Kigali were all perfectly organized; we did not have to worry about a single thing—neither in advance nor once we were on site. These were incomparably beautiful days in Uganda—highlighted, of course, by the opportunity to see the mountain gorillas—and both the organization by Magical Gorilla Adventures and Eddie’s friendly, helpful demeanor were of the very highest standard. We look forward to traveling to this wonderful region again someday, and when we do, we will certainly choose Magical Gorilla Adventures once more.
