Katuna Border, also known as Gatuna on the Rwanda side, is a crossing point between Uganda and Rwanda in Kabale district, in Uganda’s extreme southwest. Unlike the Cyanika border, which mainly serves tourists and individual travelers, Katuna is primarily a commercial crossing for imports and exports, making it Rwanda’s busiest border post. It’s open 24 hours a day.

Location and Access

Katuna sits about 15 minutes from Kabale town, a hub of hills and tourist attractions in its own right. On the Rwanda side, the border is known as Gatuna, in Gicumbi district, roughly 2 to 2.5 hours from Kigali. The proximity of both towns to a major, active border crossing has helped drive tourism and business development on each side.

Kigali: Worth the Drive

Kigali offers plenty to see for travelers heading in from Katuna, including the Kigali Genocide Memorial, the National Museum, craft markets, and shopping centers, alongside a strong local culture worth experiencing before or after a Rwanda gorilla safari.

What to Do Near Katuna Border

Lake Bunyonyi

Lake Bunyonyi is sometimes cited as Africa’s second deepest lake, though this figure has never been formally confirmed. The lake holds over 25 small islands, including the historically significant Punishment Island. Activities include day and sunset boat cruises, canoeing, zip-lining, nature walks, and community visits, making it a worthwhile stop before crossing into Rwanda.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Home to roughly 379 mountain gorillas, Bwindi sits about 1 to 2 hours from Kabale depending on which sector you’re trekking. Beyond gorillas, the park supports other primates, forest buffalo, elephants, and a wide range of plant life. A Batwa cultural encounter is a worthwhile addition for visitors interested in the region’s history alongside its wildlife.

Mgahinga National Park

Mgahinga, about 1.5 hours from Kabale in Kisoro district, is the only park in Uganda where both mountain gorillas and golden monkeys can be trekked. It’s also a starting point for hikes up Mount Sabyinyo, Mount Muhabura, and Mount Gahinga, each offering views across the wider Virunga range.

Getting to Katuna Border

From Kampala, Katuna is about an 8-hour drive via Masaka, Mbarara, and Kabale. From Kigali, the crossing is roughly 2 to 2.5 hours away, passing through rolling hills and farmland along the way.

Whether you’re heading into Rwanda or Uganda, Katuna Border sits close to some of the region’s best gorilla trekking and lake destinations. Book your Uganda-Rwanda safari with our team today, and we’ll help you plan a route through Katuna alongside gorilla trekking and Kigali city activities.
