Is Rwanda safe to visit? Yes, and it’s often ranked among the safest countries in Africa for tourism. Rwanda sits in the heart of the continent, bordered by Uganda and DR Congo on one side and Tanzania and Burundi on the other, and has built a strong reputation for stability and security over the past three decades.

Known as the Land of a Thousand Hills, Rwanda draws visitors for its mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, primates in Nyungwe Forest National Park, wildlife in Akagera National Park, and the organized, walkable city of Kigali. Despite a difficult history, including civil conflict before independence and the 1994 genocide, Rwanda has since rebuilt into one of the more secure destinations on the continent.

Gorilla Trekking Safety

Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda’s most visited park, has strict safety measures in place for both visitors and gorillas. Every trekking group is accompanied by armed rangers, protecting against wildlife encounters and other risks in the forest. Trekking groups are also capped at 8 people per gorilla family, which helps limit the risk of disease transmission to the gorillas themselves.

Health and Disease Safety

As in most of sub-Saharan Africa, malaria is the main health risk in Rwanda, and the government has worked to reduce its spread significantly. Travelers should get any recommended vaccinations before their trip and use insect repellent in malaria-prone areas. Rwanda has not had outbreaks of diseases like Ebola or cholera.

Understanding Rwanda’s History

The 1994 genocide against the Tutsi remains a defining and tragic chapter in Rwanda’s history. Following the assassination of President Juvénal Habyarimana, extremist groups carried out mass killings targeting the Tutsi population over roughly 100 days, killing an estimated 800,000 to 1 million people and displacing millions more. Tourism in the country came to a complete halt during this period.

In the years since, Rwanda has undergone major political and social change, rebuilding its institutions and economy with a strong focus on national reconciliation. This is part of why the country is now widely regarded as one of the safest in the region for both residents and visitors.

Road and Traffic Safety

Most major roads in Rwanda, including routes to national parks, are well paved. Some mountain roads can be steep, poorly lit, and slippery, so the country enforces a 40 km/h speed limit in these areas to reduce accidents. Public transportation, including motorcycle taxis in Kigali and long-distance buses, is generally safe, though it’s best to avoid traveling after dark. Solo travelers and women can generally use public transportation throughout the country without issue.
