Detailed 4-Day Rwanda Gorilla Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Akagera National Park
Today, after your relaxed morning breakfast at your hotel or airport pick-up, you will be picked up by our safari guide to begin a Kigali city excursion. Thereafter, leave for Akagera National Park.
The journey to Akagera National Park takes approximately 2 to 3 hours, depending on the stopovers along the way.
The journey is filled with beautiful landscapes en route to the park; feel free to ask the guide for stopovers to capture some memorable photos.
On arrival in Akagera National Park, optionally take an evening game drive and proceed to your accommodation for check-in and an overnight stay.
Day 2: Game Drive & Boat Cruise
Wake up to a tasty breakfast before departing the lodge for your game viewing experience. Drive to the northern section of Akagera National Park through the famous Mutumba hill for wildlife viewing moments, including parts of Tanzania.
During your game viewing drive, you will have ample opportunities to encounter savanna woodland and open savanna grassland animals, including elephants, buffaloes, Masai giraffes, birds, lions, and many antelope families.
In the afternoon, enjoy a leisurely boat cruise on Lake Ihema. The excursion lasts for up to 2 hours and presents endless opportunities to spot water animals, reptiles, and unique birds along the shores.
Day 3: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park/Evening Community Tour
Early morning wake-up, have breakfast, and check out from the lodge ready to head to Volcanoes National Park. This is about a 4-hour drive through rolling landscapes that make this country a true land of a thousand hills. Have lunch along the way and upon arrival, check in at your accommodation.
In the evening, visit the famous Iby’Iwachu Village, one of the few places where you can immerse yourself in the culture of the three tribes of Rwanda: Hutu, Tutsi, and Twa.
Here, gain insight into the lifestyle, activities, artifacts, and unique ways of life of Rwandan people through traditional performances, cuisine, and other cultural experiences.
Day 4: Gorilla Trekking & Transfer to Kigali
After breakfast, head to the park headquarters and receive a briefing from the park officials about the dos and don’ts while with the gorillas, as well as get allocated to the ranger guide and the gorilla family you’ll track. Head into the jungles and start the search for mountain gorillas.
It’s an amazing moment to be among the 8 persons allowed to visit a specific gorilla family. Once you meet them, you are only given one hour to stay with them, observing their behaviors and way of life.
Afterward, return to the lodge by 2:00 pm, have refreshments and lunch at the lodge, and later depart for Kigali city.
Depending on your flight time, be dropped off at the airport, marking the end of your 4-Day Rwanda Gorilla & Wildlife Safari.
