Detailed 15-Day Uganda Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali & Transfer to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Transfer from Kigali International Airport to Mgahinga National Park in southwestern Uganda. On this journey, travel through the rolling hills of Rwanda, passing through Ruhengeri in the Musanze Province and head to the border.

This drive offers opportunities to view the Virunga chain volcanoes and Lake Mutanda with occasional stopovers for pictures capturing the beautiful scenery of the mountains and the lake. Arrive at your lodge, check-in, have dinner, and overnight stay.

Day 2: Golden Monkey Trekking

Have breakfast at 7:00 AM and proceed for golden monkey trekking at 8:00 AM. Here, trek through the bamboo forest zones on the foothills of the Virunga volcanoes, home to the world’s old monkeys.

This is the only place where these endangered primates exist. You’ll have the opportunity to habituate with the golden monkeys, an experience lasting between 2 to 6 hours, offering a full day of interaction with these social beauties.

Day 3: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Enjoy breakfast at 7:00 AM and transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a 3-hour drive. En route, stop in Kisoro town to explore the lava tube caves once used as a safe haven during ancient civil wars.

Visit the Mwambike and Ruhenju caves located in Gigozi parish. Continue to Bwindi National Park, check-in at the lodge, relax for the evening, have dinner, and overnight stay.

Day 4: Bwindi Gorilla Trekking

Early breakfast at 6:30 AM, then head to the headquarters for a briefing on gorilla trekking guidelines. Groups of 8 are assigned to trek specific gorilla families. Trekking lasts 2 to 6 hours, allowing up to one hour to observe and photograph gorilla families up close.

This close encounter with gorillas is truly remarkable as these social animals sometimes approach very closely, providing excellent sightings and photographic opportunities. After the trek, return to the lodge for a free afternoon or take a community walk to the neighboring Batwa pygmies.

Day 5: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park

Early breakfast at 8:00 AM and transfer from Bwindi National Park to Queen Elizabeth National Park, a 3-hour drive. Stopover in Ishasha sector to view the rare tree-climbing lions as they wait for their prey, the Uganda Kobs. Proceed to Queen Elizabeth National Park for check-in at a lodge, dinner, and overnight stay.

Day 6: Game Drive & Afternoon Boat Ride

Early breakfast, followed by a morning game drive to spot wildlife such as buffaloes, hyenas, elephants, and birds like the African Jacana and stork. In the afternoon, enjoy a 2:00 PM boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, viewing crocodiles, hippos, and a variety of mammal and bird species. Relax at the lodge with dinner and overnight stay.

Day 7: Transfer to Kibale Forest National Park

After breakfast, transfer from Queen Elizabeth National Park to Kibale National Park, a 2-3 hour drive via the Kasese-Fort Portal route. In Fort Portal, visit Nyakasura Hills and the Amabeere Ga Nyina Mwiru caves, spiritual and historical sites shaped like cones with natural flowing Nyakasura Falls. Proceed to your lodge in Kibale National Park.

Day 8: Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale

Early breakfast, then head to Kanyanchu Park headquarters for a pre-trek briefing. Embark on a trek to observe chimpanzees in their natural habitat, witnessing their lively and agile behavior as they move from tree to tree, sometimes challenging for photography. Return to the lodge for lunch, followed by relaxation or an optional Bigodi Wetland Walk.

Day 9: Transfer to Murchison Falls National Park

Have breakfast at 6:30 AM, then transfer to Murchison Falls National Park, a 7-hour drive. En route, stop in Hoima town to visit the Mparo tombs, learning about the Bunyoro kingdom and ancient kings’ burial grounds. Continue to the lodge in Murchison Falls National Park for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 10: Game Drive & Boat Cruise

Early breakfast at 6:30 AM, followed by a morning game drive to spot wildlife such as elephants, buffaloes, lions, and leopards, along with diverse birdlife. After lunch, transfer to Paraa Jetty for an afternoon boat cruise to the bottom of the falls, viewing hippos, Nile crocodiles, and water birds. Hike to view the falls from the top before returning to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 11: Transfer to Kampala

Breakfast at 8:00 AM, then transfer from Murchison Falls NP to Kampala, a 6-hour journey. Stopover at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for rhino trekking and birdwatching. Have lunch en route and proceed to Kampala city for dinner and overnight stay at a hotel.

Day 12: City Tour in Kampala

Breakfast at 8:00 AM, followed by a city tour visiting ‘Kisenyi’ – a Kampala slum to experience local life, Owino Market – the city’s oldest market offering a variety of goods, and Kabaka’s Palace in Mengo to learn about Baganda traditions.

Conclude with a visit to the Gaddafi Mosque atop Kampala’s oldest and tallest hills, offering panoramic views of the city. Later, drive to Mabira Forest for a night of camping.

Day 13: Transfer to Jinja Town

After breakfast at 8:00 AM, embark on a nature walk in Mabira Forest to observe lush flora, fauna, and bird species. Experience zip-lining and proceed to Jinja town. Check into your hotel and enjoy Jinja’s nightlife.

Day 14: White Water Rafting & Bungee Jumping

After breakfast at 8:00 AM, enjoy half-day white water rafting on the White Nile in Jinja, a thrilling and memorable experience. In the afternoon, try bungee jumping for another exciting adventure. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 15: Transfer to Entebbe & Departure

Have breakfast and transfer from Jinja town to Entebbe Airport for departure, concluding your 5-Day Uganda Wildlife & Gorilla Trekking Tour.
