Detailed 4-Day Uganda Double Trekking Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (Nkuringo Sector)

Meet your company representative on day one for a briefing on the itinerary ahead. Pickup from the airport or your hotel in Kigali begins the journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda’s main home of mountain gorillas.

The drive through the Land of a Thousand Hills passes plantations, rolling hills, and views of the Virunga range on the way into Uganda. Cross the border at Katuna, with a lunch stop in nearby Kabale town.

Take a tour of the cultural museum or visit the local market before continuing to the Nkuringo sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for the overnight stay. Nkuringo sits in western Bwindi, about 55 km from Kabale town, and holds 3 habituated gorilla families available for trekking year-round.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Nkuringo and Transfer to the Rushaga Region of Bwindi

Rise early for the day’s main activity. Head to the ranger station for the briefing on trekking guidelines, then get assigned your gorilla family and set off with your ranger guide, trackers, and porters.

Birders will find plenty to see here too, with more than 450 bird species recorded in the forest, including several Rwenzori endemics, along with other mammals, monkeys, baboons, amphibians, and butterflies.

Trekking time can run from as little as 30 minutes to as long as 7 hours, depending on the gorilla family’s movements that day.

Once you find the gorillas, you get one hour to photograph and observe them as they feed and the juveniles play.

Return to the starting point to collect your gorilla trekking certificate, then head to your lodge.

In the afternoon, transfer to the Rushaga region, in southern Bwindi, ahead of your second gorilla trek the next day.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking in Rushaga

After an early breakfast, prepare for your second gorilla trek, this time in Rushaga. Rushaga holds 5 gorilla families, more than any other sector in Uganda.

Head to the trailhead for the briefing with the head ranger, then set out on the trek. The route passes through dense forest, with mammal trails that make tracking more manageable for visitors.

Resident wildlife here includes buffalo, elephants, leopards, and a range of primates and amphibians.

Within an hour or two, you’ll be with the gorillas. Observing and photographing them is a memorable part of any Uganda safari.

Afterward, have a packed lunch in the forest and transfer back to the lodge to rest. The evening is dedicated to a community visit on the edge of Bwindi forest.

Join the Batwa for traditional dance and song, a fitting close to the day.

Day 4: Transfer to Kigali

Have coffee, then begin the roughly 4-hour drive back to Kigali via the Kisoro/Cyanika border.

The drive passes through Rwandan countryside, with rural homesteads, farmland, and views of the Virunga range.

Arrive in Kigali in the afternoon, have lunch, and spend the rest of the day exploring the city, known for its hills, modern buildings, and museums and monuments. Explore Kigali’s attractions and return in time to check in at the airport for your departure flight.
