Detailed 4-Day Bwindi and Mgahinga Gorilla Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Morning pickup from the airport or your hotel by your guide. Depending on your arrival time, take a Kigali city tour.

Stops include the Kigali Genocide Memorial, in the Gisozi suburb, built to commemorate the 1994 Rwandan genocide, which claimed over 1,000,000 lives. Continue to the Presidential Palace Museum and the Kigali craft market, among other stops.

Afterward, stop for coffee at the Radisson Blu or the Hôtel des Mille Collines ahead of the drive to Uganda.

The trip to Mgahinga National Park is long but rewarding. The park sits in Uganda’s southwestern corner, within the Virunga region, bordering Rwanda to the south and the DRC to the southwest.

The route passes views of the Virunga range’s 8 volcanoes and Rwanda’s rolling hills. Passing through Musanze, home of Volcanoes National Park in northwestern Rwanda, cross into Uganda via the Cyanika border in Kisoro district. Arrive in the evening for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking and Transfer to Bwindi

Have breakfast at the lodge, then your guide will drive you to Ntebeko park headquarters to prepare for the day’s gorilla trek.

Attend the briefing with other trekkers and the head ranger, covering the trekking etiquette to follow before and during your encounter with the gorillas.

Gorilla tracking in Mgahinga National Park is a rare experience, and it’s worth being well prepared for it.

Set out with a ranger, trackers, and a porter if you need help with heavier luggage. Trekking time is unpredictable, ranging from a 1-hour hike to a full day in the forest.

Once you find the gorillas, you get up to one hour to observe them in the wild and learn about their history, conservation status, and family structure.

After the trek, return to the lodge with your guide. In the evening, drive to Bwindi’s southern sector, Rushaga, ahead of another gorilla trek the following morning.

Day 3: Bwindi Gorilla Trekking and Community Walk

Start the morning with coffee against the chill typical of the Rushaga region. After breakfast, transfer to the briefing point near Rushaga ranger station.

The head ranger will cover what to expect, along with the trekking etiquette and behavior to observe while searching for the gorillas.

After the briefing, enter the forest in search of the gorillas, one of the standout experiences of any safari in Africa.

The terrain can be rough and muddy, especially in the rainy season, and the trek calls for a reasonable level of fitness. Meeting the gorillas, particularly a dominant silverback up close, makes the effort worthwhile.

Trekking time typically runs 1 to 2 hours but can extend to 6 hours or more depending on the gorillas’ movements. Bring a packed lunch, water, and snacks.

Return to your lodge to rest, then in the afternoon, take a community walk to visit the local Batwa community, the historical inhabitants of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Learn about their culture, daily life, and traditional dance.

Day 4: Transfer to Kigali

After breakfast, depart Rushaga for Kigali, crossing via the Cyanika border in Kisoro through Rwanda’s Northern Province.

On arrival in the city, have lunch and take a short city tour if you missed it on day one, including the Genocide Memorial sites, the Nyamirambo Women’s Center, and local shopping.

Afterward, you’ll be driven to your accommodation or to Kigali airport for your departure flight.
