Detailed 6-Day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking & Serengeti Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive at Kigali Airport & Drive to Volcanoes National Park
Arrive at the bustling Kigali airport – the main entry point of Rwanda, and be welcomed by our company representative who will then transfer you to Rwanda’s home of mountain gorillas, Volcanoes National Park.
Set off on a trip to the northwest, about a 4-5 hour drive heading to the gorilla land. Traverse Rwanda’s most scenic landscapes but interrupt the trip with various stops to seize moments and take a handful of scenic photos.
The first stop is made at a viewpoint of the entire Virunga mountain ranges which stretch from Rwanda, Uganda, through to D.R. Congo, providing endless chances of great photography as well as videography. The entire highway is marked with spectacular landscapes in the furthest countryside, stretching farmlands, plantations, and rural settlements.
Proceed to the northwestern province to Kinigi town on the outskirts of the park, arrive at your lodge in the evening, check in, and have a delicious dinner.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in PNV & Culture
Being Rwanda’s prime home of the mountain gorillas, Volcanoes National Park is arguably the most famous of all wildlife parks in Rwanda. This day brings you closer to the world’s most endangered species of gorillas. The experience begins at 7:30 am after your breakfast, with a briefing session, and thereafter you proceed to the jungles in the company of armed rangers, guides, and trackers.
The gorilla trekking experience in PNV may last for up to 8 hours, but depending on the movements of an allocated family, you can even meet them in less than two hours. The jungles of Volcanoes National Park comprise misty forests, almost impenetrable, foggy, and sometimes slippery, especially during the rainy seasons.
The adventure may be quite tedious and hectic but the joy of meeting a family of these mighty apes is worth the hard trek.
While in the midst of a well-habituated gorilla family, you can watch them play and enjoy their drama for only one hour before trekking back to the starting point. Meet with your driver who will drive you back to your place of stay.
Spend the early afternoon relaxing and meditating on the joyous experience of gorilla trekking, and later in the evening, transfer to the nearby Iby’Iwachu cultural village which is a famous spot for melodious traditional songs, energetic performances of the Rwandese, and a center for unmatched cultural experiences in Rwanda.
Day 3: Return to Kigali & Fly to Kilimanjaro International Airport
Have an early breakfast, and depart from Volcanoes National Park, driving back to Kigali International Airport. Drive via the panoramic Virunga ranges, or you can make a brief en-route visit to the twin lakes – Ruhondo and Burera.
These are definitely some of the most scenic lakes in East Africa and worldwide. Time allowing, you can take a short canoe trip to enjoy their uniqueness, rich history, and geographical formation.
Continue to Kigali city which is Africa’s cleanest and fastest growing into an ultra-modern city ahead of many African cities. Upon arrival, your guide will take you to a local restaurant where you can enjoy cultural cuisine before you leave.
Proceed to Kigali airport in Kamembe, take an evening flight to Tanzania, arrive through Arusha International Airport, and meet with your Tanzania guide who will transfer you to the lodge for a night stay and dinner.
Day 4: Arusha to Serengeti National Park, Evening Game Drive
Breakfast will be served at 6:00 am to prepare for an early departure from Arusha to Serengeti National Park. This is not only Tanzania’s most famous and one of the biggest game parks but also one of the seven wonders of the world.
In a comfortable 4X4 Safari land cruiser, the journey to Serengeti is more or less 5 hours from Arusha, traversing amazing sceneries where you will stop for amazing photography. Enter Serengeti via the Ngorongoro gate, check in, and have lunch.
Spend most of the afternoon relaxing and viewing the teeming wildlife from the balcony of your room, and later in the evening, undertake a leisurely sunset game drive to spot large mammals retiring, huge flocks of birds, and numerous prides of cats and predators.
Serengeti is well known for its sprawling landscapes, sweeping savannah which is home to the largest herds of elephants, and also pleasant populations of mammals such as buffaloes, zebras, roan antelopes, giraffes, and cats like leopards, and lions.
Day 5: Second Game Drive in Serengeti National Park & Proceed to Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Begin this day with an early game drive from Serengeti National Park as you proceed to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area where you will carry out another game drive. At Ngorongoro Conservation Area, you will descend to the crater, an area with the highest concentration of animals in Tanzania.
You will be able to spot the Big 5 mammals of Africa from the comfort of your safari jeep. After this stunning game drive, you will drive to your accommodation facility near Lake Eyasi.
Day 6: Morning Boat Cruise at Lake Eyasi & Transfer to Arusha for Departure
Wake up to an early morning breakfast as you watch the sunrise over Lake Eyasi, head for a morning launch trip to explore this beautiful lake, and then drive to Arusha International Airport or JRO Kilimanjaro International Airport where you will catch your late-night outbound flight.
