After lunch, proceed directly to Nyungwe National Park for dinner and an overnight stay at the lodge overlooking Nyungwe Forest.

Day 3: Chimpanzee Trekking & Canopy Walk

Today, after your morning breakfast, leave your lodge to experience the natural forest of Nyungwe, famous for having 13 species of primates. Track the endangered chimps and also take part in a canopy walk, which will give you a magnificent experience of exploring the forest from the top.

Chimpanzee tracking sets off at 8:00 am from Gisakura Park headquarters. The experience lasts between 1 to 5 hours depending on the location and movement of the chimpanzee troops.

Other than chimpanzees, you will be able to sight other primates like black-and-white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, grey-cheeked Mangabey, L’Hoest monkeys, bush babies, pottos, and numerous endemic bird species like the rumped tinker bird, the crowned eagle, little greenbul, yellow-spotted nectar, green-breasted pitta, black bee-eater, and large mammals like elephants. In the afternoon, undertake another adventurous experience of the Nyungwe Forest canopy walk.

This canopy walk avails amazing opportunities to view elusive birds, rare primates, and other nocturnal species of the forest.

Day 4: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

After an early breakfast in Nyungwe, transfer to Gisenyi for a boat ride and visit different islands on Lake Kivu (Rwanda’s biggest lake). During a speed boat trip, you will also be able to see a myriad of bird species such as the African darter and pied kingfisher.

Later, head for lunch along one of the magnificent white sand beaches. After lunch, proceed on a drive to Volcanoes National Park, the home of mountain gorillas and golden monkeys in Rwanda.

After breakfast at your lodge, head to the Volcanoes National Park ranger station for a briefing by the head ranger. Then drive to the trailhead for the start of your amazing gorilla tracking adventure.

Porters can be hired at the briefing point to help carry your backpack and trekking gear. Your trek starts in the cultivated foothills of the Virungas, offering stunning views at every turn.

Upon sighting the gorillas, you will stay with them for a magical hour as they go about their daily life, feeding, playing, resting, and caring for their young ones.

Trek back to the starting point, meet with your guide who will drive you back to the lodge for lunch, and spend the rest of the day relaxing and reflecting on this magical adventure.
