Why Book a Uganda Gorilla Trekking Safari

Uganda has two parks for gorilla trekking: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, part of a wider gorilla sanctuary landscape that Uganda shares with Rwanda and the DRC. Mgahinga sits inside the same Virunga Conservation Area as Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and Congo’s Virunga National Park. Mgahinga has one gorilla family and also offers golden monkey tracking, which makes it a strong add-on for anyone touring Uganda beyond gorilla trekking alone.

Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s oldest and largest park, covering 3,893 square kilometers, and a common stop for travelers combining a Uganda safari with gorilla trekking. Paraa is its main wildlife viewing area, and it is the only park in Uganda with all the Big Five. Rhinos live a short distance outside the park. The park’s main feature is the Devil’s Cauldron, where the Nile forces through a narrow gorge before dropping over the falls. Boat trips run to the top and bottom of the falls, and pair well with a wider African safari in Uganda that includes wildlife game drives.

Where to See Mountain Gorillas in Uganda

Uganda has five locations for gorilla trekking. Four sit inside Bwindi Impenetrable National Park: Rushaga, Ruhija, Nkuringo, and Buhoma. The fifth is Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Buhoma is the oldest sector and the birthplace of gorilla trekking tours in Uganda. Each sector gives a different gorilla trek in Uganda, from terrain to scenery to which gorilla families you visit, and covering all four completes the Bwindi gorilla circuit.

Over 80% of Uganda safari packages include at least one gorilla hike in Uganda, and some travelers book multiple treks across different sectors to see more of the mountain gorillas in Uganda in one trip.

Planning a Trip to Uganda

Most trips to Uganda to see gorillas start in Entebbe, the country’s main entry point, and Kampala, the capital city. A Kampala city tour at the end of your itinerary is worth adding on.

Uganda has 10 national parks in total: Murchison Falls, Kibale Forest, Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi Impenetrable, Lake Mburo, Kidepo Valley, Mount Elgon, Semuliki Valley, Rwenzori Mountains, and Mgahinga Gorilla. Bwindi and Mgahinga carry higher costs than the other parks because of gorilla trekking permit fees.

Building the Best Uganda Safari Itinerary

A strong Uganda safari itinerary combines gorilla trekking with chimpanzee trekking, wildlife game drives, a boat cruise, and at least one hike. Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking together in Uganda give you two very different primate encounters on the same trip. Gorilla trekking is the main draw for most visitors and the highest-cost activity on any itinerary, so plan your budget around it first. Despite the cost, gorilla trekking remains the primary safari activity in Uganda, making up over 90% of all safaris booked in the country. Shorter options exist too. A 3-day Uganda gorilla safari from Kigali covers a single trek plus travel days, and works well if your time is limited.

Uganda also combines well with neighboring countries. A Uganda and Rwanda safari lets you compare gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda on one trip, while a Kenya and Uganda safari pairs Uganda’s gorillas with Kenya’s classic savanna game drives.

Choosing the Best Gorilla Trekking Company in Uganda

Treat general travel guides as a starting point, not the final word, since your experience will differ from what any guide describes. It is better to get advice directly from your tour operator when planning a Uganda gorilla safari tour.

Sector conditions change often, and new activities keep getting added. A gorilla trekking sector can go from quiet to busy within a season, which changes how easy it is to find gorillas there. This kind of up-to-date information only comes from operators working in the parks day to day, not from a general guidebook.

The best Uganda gorilla trekking companies are the ones who allocate you to the right sector based on current conditions, not outdated general advice. Check reviews on Tripadvisor for gorilla tours in Uganda before you book, and ask your shortlisted operators as many questions as you need. A good one will answer fully and advise you where it helps.

Entry Requirements for Uganda

You need a yellow fever vaccination certificate, a visa, and a passport valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates.

Uganda Visa Requirements

A Uganda visa costs $50. You can apply online in advance and expect processing within 4 to 7 days. You must submit your yellow fever certificate with your application, since applications without it are usually rejected.

When to Book Your Uganda Gorilla Safari

Book your safari as early as possible to secure gorilla trekking permits in Uganda. During high season (January, February, and June through September), book at least five months ahead. If you are traveling on short notice, you can still check permit availability, and your operator can arrange the trip if permits remain open.

Uganda Gorilla Trekking Permits and Cost

The Uganda Wildlife Authority issues all gorilla trekking permits in Uganda. Each permit costs $800 and is valid year-round, which is the core figure behind most Uganda gorilla trekking cost estimates you’ll see quoted elsewhere. Rangers check your permit at the park office and assign you to a specific gorilla family. You cannot trek without one.

Permits are non-refundable if you cancel. A reliable operator can resell or reschedule your permit and process your refund directly. Permits sell on a first-come, first-served basis, so book early, especially for high season dates. Beyond the permit fee, your overall Uganda safari cost depends mainly on your choice of transport and accommodation, covered below.

Luxury and Budget Gorilla Safaris in Uganda

Gorilla permit fees are the same for every traveler, whether you book a luxury Uganda gorilla safari or a budget one. The difference between a luxury safari in Uganda and a budget trip is transportation and accommodation, and a good operator can arrange either for you.

Budget safaris run on rates negotiated through the operator’s existing accommodation contracts, passed on to you at a discount. Transportation on budget and luxury trips alike should run in regularly serviced, well-maintained, air-conditioned vans.

Luxury gorilla trekking in Uganda means staying in the finest properties in the park, most positioned near the Buhoma sector trailheads for convenience. Longer luxury bookings often include free gorilla permits as part of the package. On some luxury Uganda safari itineraries, scheduled flights replace road transfers to cut down travel time between parks.

How Long Gorilla Trekking Takes

Gorilla trekking in Uganda takes 2 to 6 hours; in Rwanda it takes 1 to 6 hours. Gorillas build new nests each night and move daily to find food, so how long your gorilla tracking in Uganda takes depends on where the family slept the night before. A family close to the trailhead can mean a 2-hour trek. A family higher in the hills means a longer one.

Once you find them, you get one hour walking with the gorillas in Uganda at a minimum distance of 8 meters, following your ranger’s instructions at all times. Many treks include the chance to observe a silverback gorilla up close during this hour. After the hour, you return to the trailhead, receive your gorilla trekking certificate, and head back to your lodge.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

There is no single best time to trek. Trails are easier to walk in the dry season. Gorillas are easier to find in the rainy season, since they stay at lower elevations to feed. Rainy season trekking needs footwear with strong grip, since trails get slippery. For the driest conditions, book June through September or December through February. Some rain is still possible in these months, but less likely than in the rest of the year.

Discounted Uganda Gorilla Trips

Book a safari of 13 days or more and get one free gorilla permit, worth $800. Book 20 days or more and get two free permits, worth $1,800 combined. These offers apply to any Uganda gorilla holiday booked with us, and help offset the overall safari uganda prices you’d otherwise pay for permits separately.

Why Uganda Is One of the Best Safaris in Africa

Uganda has more gorilla trekking sectors than any other country and a wider range of accommodation, from budget to luxury, inside and outside the parks. It also offers more add-on activities than Rwanda or Congo, which is part of why it consistently ranks among the best safaris in Uganda for first-time and repeat visitors alike.

Uganda holds the largest mountain gorilla population of any country, and its permits cost less than Rwanda’s, ranking second only to Congo at $800 per person. Uganda is also one of the safest countries in the region for travel. If Uganda permits are sold out for your dates, Rwanda and Congo are the alternatives.

The driver muzwhei was amazing from start to finish, ensuring a safe journey, amazing conversation and knowledge that he shared, and ensuring I saw things I enjoyed along the way ! The lodgings were amazing and the treks with both the gorillas and golden monkey were a once in a lifetime opportunity ! I also participated in the additional options of the batwya people and boat cruise on lake bunyonyi which were both great ! Consider magical gorillas of your in need of a trek or safari !

Happy Travels

I recently traveled to Uganda with Magical Gorillas, and it was an outstanding experience from start to finish. Our tour guides, Eddie and Collins, were exceptional. They were knowledgeable, professional, friendly, and always went the extra mile to ensure everything ran smoothly. The transportation was comfortable throughout the trip, and the drivers were safe and reliable, which made the long drives between destinations very enjoyable. The tour was delivered exactly as outlined in the itinerary, with no unexpected changes or hidden costs. Everything was well organized, and the accommodations exceeded our expectations. The lodges were of a very high standard, and the food at each location was excellent. The highlights of the trip were undoubtedly the chimpanzee and mountain gorilla trekking experiences, both of which were unforgettable. The boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel was another standout, offering incredible wildlife viewing in a beautiful setting. Overall, I would highly recommend Magical Gorillas to anyone considering a safari or wildlife adventure in Uganda. They delivered a seamless, high-quality experience that exceeded our expectations.

The only bad thing about our trip with Eddie was that it was only two days and not longer. But boy, did we have a great time on those two days! Magical Gorilla Adventures chose an idyllic lodge for us, Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge, and a wonderful restaurant for lunch on our second day, the Bird's Nest. We enjoyed the Batwa Cultural Walk and the boat trip on Lake Bonyonyi very much. Needless to say, the highlight of our trip was the time we spent with the gorilla family. They put on a great show for us, especially the baby. A dream come true! Thank you, Magical Gorilla Adventures, for this truly magical experience. And thank you so much, Eddie, for not only providing us with the smoothest trip, but also for being so friendly and funny and for making the car rides very interesting and enjoyable!

During our journey through East Africa (specifically Rwanda), we also wanted to see the gorillas. We decided in advance to visit the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, partly because it is located not far from Kigali, but also because we were keen to make a side trip into Uganda. Having completed our tour of Rwanda as self-drivers, we decided to hire a professional tour operator for the trip to Bwindi—someone familiar with local conditions who would allow us to focus on enjoying the region's highlights rather than on the logistics. We compared various providers for this purpose and ultimately chose Magical Gorilla Adventures. Looking back, we can say that this was an excellent decision. Communication with their team was seamless via WhatsApp. It was important to us to include a visit to the local Batwa community alongside the gorilla trekking—a request that was immediately granted. Furthermore, they even added a boat trip on Lake Bunyonyi to the itinerary. From the very first day of the trip, everything ran flawlessly. Our driver and guide, Eddie, picked us up at our hotel in Kigali and drove us across the border to our (truly stunning) lodge near the Bwindi Forest. The tour of the Batwa community, the gorilla trekking the following morning, the boat trip, and finally the return journey to Kigali were all perfectly organized; we did not have to worry about a single thing—neither in advance nor once we were on site. These were incomparably beautiful days in Uganda—highlighted, of course, by the opportunity to see the mountain gorillas—and both the organization by Magical Gorilla Adventures and Eddie’s friendly, helpful demeanor were of the very highest standard. We look forward to traveling to this wonderful region again someday, and when we do, we will certainly choose Magical Gorilla Adventures once more.
