Detailed 7-Day Kilimanjaro Machame Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Arusha and Transfer to Moshi Town

Arrive and transfer to a hotel in Moshi, the nearest town to Mount Kilimanjaro. You will rest for the night to remain energetic to start the hike the next morning.

You can take a short city tour while in this town. This is optional and at your cost.

Day 2: Drive to Machame Gate and Hike to Machame Camp

Have breakfast in the morning and transfer to Machame Gate. At this point, you will receive a briefing and other necessities required for the trek. You will walk through the lush lower slopes.

Enjoy the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro as you appreciate the views of different flora and fauna in these forests. Take pictures of distant glaciers if the weather is clear.

This walk will take about 6 to 7 hours to reach Machame Camp, where you will spend the night.

Day 3: Hike to Shira Campsite

Proceed with the hike after breakfast and leave the forests in the lower parts of Mount Kilimanjaro. This hike will take you through another unique vegetation zone as you pass through the rocky, steep ridges covered by heath and moss.

This amazing hike will take about 5 to 7 hours, depending on the speed, until you reach Shira Camp, where you will stay for the night.

Day 4: Climb to Barranco Camp

Start the day by hiking through the desert and rocky landscape around the Lava Tower. This trail rewards with interesting views and opportunities to photograph the Breach Wall.

This will be the toughest day since you will require the use of some hiking tools like supportive walking sticks, ropes, ice hammers, and more.

Most hikers normally reach this point and start experiencing symptoms of high altitude sickness, difficulty in breathing, and headaches. You will head straight to Barranco Camp after your lunch.

Day 5: Hike to Barafu Camp

This is yet another great adventure, hiking up the Barranco Wall. Though not technical, it is very challenging and amazing. The climb becomes easier once on top of the wall.

Enjoy the hike as the trail becomes easier and fun with fantastic viewpoints of Kibo glaciers on the left. Descend to Karanga Valley Camp for lunch and then continue to Barafu Camp.

Barafu is a Swahili word which means ice, and therefore, freezing temperatures start at this point.

Day 6: Hike to the Summit and Descend back to Mweka Camp

You will wake up early in the morning with headlight torches and start the hike, which will take about 4 hours to reach the summit, called Uhuru Peak.

You will take a leisurely hike as it demands you wake up at night, passing through rocky outcrops. Enjoy the sunrise at the summit, and the time spent there taking memorable photos will depend on your arrival time.

The summit rewards you with the highest point in Africa. Afterward, descend to Barafu Camp for lunch, and then head to Mweka Camp for your night camping.

Day 7: Descend to the Gate and Transfer back to Arusha Town

After breakfast, proceed on a descent to the gate where you will meet your driver guide, who will take you straight to Arusha.

Be dropped at the airport, marking the end of the 7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro hiking adventure via the Machame route.
