Detailed 5-Day 4 Gorilla Treks Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (Buhoma Sector)

Arrive at Kigali International Airport for your 5-Day Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Circuit, meet and greet with our safari guide who will later transport you to a nearby motel/restaurant for refreshments and breakfast. After breakfast, undertake a solemn visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial.

Don’t miss this stop to pay tribute and remember the horrors of the Rwandan genocide but also appreciate the way Rwanda (just 25 years later) has rebounded from this tragedy as an economic and socially progressive beacon in the East African region.

Visit other important sites within the city as well, including the Presidential Palace Museum, stellar monuments in the heart of the city, and more. Transfer to Uganda’s border afterward, via Rwanda’s northern scenic plains and picturesque landscapes.

Drive through to Kabale town, a major border town near Katuna border, and proceed to Buhoma region. Buhoma is the northern sector of Bwindi National Park and the oldest and most famous of all 4 sectors.

It is home to up to 4 gorilla families and the best gorilla trekking place in the world.

Day 2: First Gorilla Trekking & Transfer to Ruhija Sector of Bwindi

The first gorilla trek will be in Buhoma. After your breakfast, prepare for your first gorilla experience in Bwindi’s premier and oldest gorilla region.

Buhoma was first opened in 1993 after the successful habituation process of the Mubare gorilla family. Be lucky to track Uganda’s first-ever habituated gorilla family.

Gorilla trekking in Buhoma begins at 7:30 am with a briefing at the park headquarters; afterward, trekkers enter the forest for their first-ever gorilla encounter.

Meeting face-to-face with a humble and gigantic mountain gorilla is truly an exciting moment, with other gorillas comfortable with his presence.

Watch them play, feed, and interact as knowledgeable ranger guides tell you about the genetics of mountain gorillas, their history, and conservation status.

Trekking time can take between 1 – 6 hours depending on the family you are tracking and its movements. Afterward, trek back to the starting point and later to the lodge to refresh and check out. Transfer later in the afternoon to the east of Bwindi to Ruhija sector. Overnight stay at the lodge.

Day 3: Second Gorilla Trekking & Transfer to Rushaga Region of Bwindi

This is yet another day to enjoy a magical gorilla encounter in the East of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

Ruhija is a sector with 3 gorilla families, fully habituated and open for visitation all year round.

Meet face-to-face with the amazing silverback and have a fun moment while taking photos, videos, and learning more about the lifestyle and general behaviors of the mountain gorillas.

After trekking, take a drive past the Kigezi terraced highlands into the southeastern-based Rushaga region. One of the regions in Bwindi with the most number of habituated gorilla families. Overnight stay and dinner at the lodge.

Day 4: Third Gorilla Trekking & Transfer to Nkuringo Sector of Bwindi

Few words can describe the thrill of the gorilla experience in Rushaga region! This is the most virgin and less explored of all the four regions.

Perched at the southeastern tip of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, in addition to gorilla trekking, Rushaga presents unrivaled views of the Virunga ranges and magical Kigezi rolling hills.

Coming face-to-face with mountain gorillas in Rushaga is a rare wildlife encounter that is exhilarating, humbling, and worth the costly gorilla permit.

Experienced and knowledgeable ranger guides and trackers will escort your group on an early morning trek into the nearly impenetrable rainforest to begin the day’s adventure.

Gorilla tracking in Rushaga is strenuous and tiresome due to the misty and steep jungles; the duration of the trek can range between 1 hour and 8 hours.

The exciting one hour you spend quietly observing these mighty primates once you find them is undeniably worth the tiresome trek.

Although mountain gorillas are wild animals and sightings can never be guaranteed, the success rate of finding them is as high as 95%. After the 1-hour meeting with gorillas, trek back to the lodge for a complimentary lunch or snack and take a leisurely drive through Kigezi picturesque hills to the nearby Nkuringo sector.

Depending on where you’re staying, you can take a casual walk around Kisoro town.

Day 5: Fourth Gorilla Trekking & Transfer to Kigali

This is the last and most exciting gorilla sector on this safari. Nkuringo is another less explored gorilla region located on the southern tip of Bwindi, with fantastic views of D.R. Congo Mountains on one side and Virunga towering ranges on the other side.

Nkuringo sector has only 2 gorilla families, but tracking here is characterized by moving up and down hills through dense slippery jungles, until you come across a well-habituated family.

Until your recommended one hour elapses, trek back to the starting point, and meet with your safari guide who will transfer you to Kisoro/Cyanika border and continue to Kigali to catch your departure flight.

This marks the end of your 5-day quadruple gorilla trekking tour.
