Detailed 2-Day Rwanda Gorilla Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park Rwanda
Early morning pickup from Kigali (around 4:00 am). Immediately drive northwest to Musanze at the foothills of the prehistoric Virunga ranges. Arrive around 6:30 am and transfer to the briefing point.
Like most expeditions in Volcanoes National Park, a typical hiking day of Mount Bisoke begins at the park headquarters of Kinigi at 7:00 am with a simple briefing.
At around 8:00 am, you set off for the hike led by a ranger who has a wealth of experience in hiking adventures on Bisoke Mountain.
It is a straightforward hike that even novices can summit and descend on the same day. The starting point of the trek is roughly a 40-minute drive from the park headquarters on a very bumpy road. Porters are always available to help carry your luggage during the hike.
During the ascent, trekkers regularly encounter mountain primates, including monkeys and baboons, and have a minute or two for viewing or taking photographs along the hiking trail.
Finally, you’ll arrive at the mountaintop of Bisoke, where there’s the largest and most spectacular Crater Lake in the nation, offering one of the most scenic views travelers will ever experience above Rwanda and D.R. Congo. It is a sight that can never disappoint.
The Crater Lake is stunningly covered with a large cloud cover that keeps the temperatures relatively high. Yes, it is worth every step taken up.
Spend time taking pictures, eat your packed lunch, relax, refresh, and soon begin hiking down. The descent is quite fast, and you will arrive at the lodge in the early evening. Transfer to the hotel for a hot shower and refresh from this adventurous excursion.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park & Transfer back to Kigali
Enjoy an early breakfast and head to the park headquarters at Kinigi for a briefing by the park rangers. By 8:30 am, the ranger guide will take you to the starting point of the gorilla trek.
Gorilla groups will be allocated to guests, and these are randomly selected; however, visitors can always request their favorite gorilla family based on age, physical fitness, and health.
Our experienced guides have built a mutual relationship with park officials over time. They can talk to them on your behalf beforehand and express the visitors’ interests in a specific gorilla group.
A gorilla trek may last from 30 minutes to 8 hours depending on the movements of these gentle giants. Upon return, your driver guide will transfer you back to Kigali and drop you off at your hotel or at the airport for a scheduled onward flight.
