Detailed 3-Day Mgahinga Gorilla Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Pick Up and Drive to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

On day 1 of this 3-Day Mgahinga Gorilla Trekking & Nature Hiking Tour from Kigali, depart and head to the very southwestern corner of Uganda, driving for about 4 – 4.5 hours from Rwanda’s capital – Kigali. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is located amidst the Virunga mountain range – a famous chain of 8 mountains that span Uganda, Rwanda, and D.R. Congo.

The park is famous for its huge black apes and also offers outstanding trekking expeditions on its three extinct volcanoes. The journey traverses Rwanda’s northern region and enters Uganda through Cyanika/Kisoro border.

If you arrive early enough, you can take a short community tour in the evening to experience the culture and traditions of the natives, especially the Batwa pygmies. Check in at your lodge for relaxation, supper, and sleep, awaiting the next day’s big adventure.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga

Right after your hearty breakfast on this magical day of your 3-Day Mgahinga Gorilla Trekking & Nature Hiking Tour from Kigali, proceed to the ranger station at Ntebeko for a pre-trek briefing regarding the dos and don’ts of gorilla trekking.

Immediately begin the hike through the verdant jungle in search of the endangered mountain gorillas. Some amount of physical fitness is required for this activity since it involves ascending and descending hills and steep rocky and boggy jungles.

The gorilla experience is tiring but worthwhile when you finally meet face-to-face with the Mountain Gorillas.

You’ll find them in a family setting as they go about their day-to-day routine; mothers caring for babies, infants playing, and feeding while the gigantic Silverback provides ultimate protection to the entire group.

Maintain a reasonable distance while observing them, and remember to turn off the flash of your camera when capturing images/videos.

The gorilla trekking expedition can take between two to six hours, depending on the gorillas’ movements. Immediately after trekking, head back to the starting point, meet your driver/guide who will drive back to the lodge for relaxation.

Depending on the time and your energy, you can take a nature walk to see the beautiful crater lakes in the region and an evening cultural walk to interact with the local people. Enjoy traditional performances and conservation songs—an amazing way to end the day.
