5 Days Combine Gorilla Trek Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Kigali & Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Morning pick up from the airport or from overnight hotel in Kigali, have breakfast, and begin your journey to the north-west of the country, at a point of intersection where DR Congo, Rwanda and Uganda meet. Arriving in Musanze town, check in at the lodge, have lunch and relax. In the afternoon, go for an authentic Rwandan village experience in Iby’Iwachu community. Experience the village, mix and mingle with the locals and learn about their lifestyle. Return to the lodge for dinner, overnight stay and a stunning camp fire.
Day 2: PNV Gorilla Trekking & Cultural Experience
Rise up to a beautiful morning and a delicious breakfast. Drive to Kinigi Park headquarters by 7:00am and assemble for briefing about the regulations to be observed while trekking these rare primates. Escorted by the park rangers, trackers and porters, begin your gorilla expedition through the dense alpine vegetation.
Depending on the location of a specific gorilla family, trekking time is highly unpredictable, ranging from 30 minutes – 7 hours. Upon meeting them, you are only given one hour to be in their midst as you watch them feed, paly and mothers breastfeed. Enjoy your stay with them as you photograph, and learn more about their lifestyle. Retreat back to the starting point for your tracking certificate, link up with the guide and return to the lodge thereafter.
Spend the afternoon resting, or visit the Ib’yiwachu Cultural center to get a crystal clear showcase of the traditional Rwandan culture and way of life. Alternatively, take a tour the nearby Musanze caves and learn about their history as hideouts for cultural armies during the ancient civil wars in this part of Rwanda.
Day 3: Transfer to Virunga National Park
After an early breakfast, leave Volcanoes national park and set off for Virunga National Park in the north Kivu province of D.R. Congo. Driving southwest to Congo’s eastern province is typically enjoyable, marked with unmatched scenic views of the Virunga massif, plantations and the shimmering Lake Kivu. Cross through Goma boarder, have an Enroute lunch in Goma town and later proceed with your Congo driver to the park. Dinner and overnight rest in Virunga National Park.
Day 4: Virunga Gorilla Trekking
Wake up to an adventure filled day in Virunga national park! Take an early breakfast, and drive to either Mikeno or Bukima visitor Centre for pre-trek briefing about the dos and don’ts of gorilla trekking experience. You will be divided into groups of eight and assigned a specific gorilla group. From here, proceed to the gorilla trekking starting point and meet with your ranger guide, trackers and a porter (if you wish to hire one). The length of the trek differs depending on the day’s movement and location of the gorillas as well as the weather conditions.
Finding these gentle giants in their natural habitat face to face is a unique experience which everyone should not miss during their safari in Africa. Bring with you long trousers, strong hiking boots, garden gloves for protection against thorny shrubs and stinging nettles, rain proof jacket, enough drinking water as well as packed lunch/snacks. You are only allowed to spend with the gorillas one hour which is a truly amazing experience as you see them feed and going about their daily routine, before trekking back to the starting point. Return to the lodge for relaxation and meditation.
Day 5: Transfer to Kigali
Have a leisurely breakfast and get ready for a journey back to Kigali city. Cross via Goma boarder and enjoy the sights and sounds of Rwanda’s wilderness and rolling hills. Arrive in Kigali for lunch, rest and engage in a short city tour to visit the Genocide Memorial museum, shopping malls and craft markets for some shopping before heading to the airport for your departure flight.
