Detailed 7-Day Kenya Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi to Maasai Mara
On day one of your Kenya safari, you will be picked up from the airport or Nairobi lodging where you spent the night.
Your devoted and caring guide will briefly tell you about this 7-day Kenya family safari; what to expect, the places you will visit, and officially welcome you to magical Kenya before embarking on your transfer to the famous Maasai Mara National Reserve.
The drive will take you through Narok Town and the scenic Great African Rift Valley.
You will arrive in time for a refreshing and delicious lunch at the reserve. After some brief rest, head out for your first adventure with an afternoon drive in the park.
This offers an opportunity to encounter the king of the jungle – lions and other big cats like cheetahs. Other notable species include some of the Big Five like African elephants and buffaloes.
After your game drive, return to your scenic lodge for a delightful dinner and rest in preparation for the next day’s activities.
Day 2: Full day in Masai Mara National Reserve
This day will be entirely dedicated to exciting safari drives and game watching. The family will spend the whole day exploring the various sections of Masai Mara.
After the morning game drive, you will break off for a short lunch break. Have a beautiful family picnic in the African wilderness overlooking the Mara River.
After this lunch picnic, resume your quest for encountering more of the park’s residents. The Masai Mara is famous for its huge herds of grazers, ranging from zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, several types of antelopes, celebrated wildebeests, and large schools of hippos.
This brings in their natural predators closely following behind like lions, hyenas, elusive leopards, and cheetahs.
A visit to the Masai Mara River gives you the chance to encounter one of the largest populations of the formidable crocodiles that usually have a frenzy during the wildebeest migration across the river as they prey on the helpless herds navigating to cross the river. You will later return to the lodge for an awaited savory dinner plus an overnight sleep.
Day 3: Masai Mara to Lake Nakuru
You will wake up early to a spirit-lifting breakfast, after which the family will have one last enchanting game drive in the Masai Mara.
Immediately after your morning game drive, head out for Lake Nakuru. This transfer will take you via the beautiful Lake Naivasha as you also enjoy the picturesque Kenyan countryside.
You will arrive at Lake Nakuru later in time for a late but pleasant lunch.
The family will spend the rest of the afternoon and evening exploring Lake Nakuru Park. Lake Nakuru is well-known for its tremendous flocks of flamingos that roam its shallow shores and the rare and critically endangered white rhinos.
The park is one of the few destinations where you can encounter the endangered species of rhinos in the wild.
The park is also an amazing destination for birding enthusiasts with a great collection of over 400 bird species, including the Abyssinian thrush, Bateleur, Black-winged lapwing, Grey-crowned crane, Grey-headed woodpecker, Arrow-marked babbler, Brimstone canary, Brown-backed scrub robin, Greater spotted eagle, European roller, Great snipe, Grey-crested helmet-shrike, and Hildebrandt’s starling, among others.
After your evening expedition, head back to an awaiting pleasing dinner. Refresh, interact with family about the day’s activities before calling it a night and resting.
Day 4: Lake Nakuru to Amboseli National Park
In the morning after your delectable breakfast, check out of your lodge and go out for an early but shorter morning game drive as you head out of Lake Nakuru National Park.
The transfer will be a leisurely drive from Lake Nakuru, though a bit longer. Take a few stopovers along the road to stretch your legs and also appreciate the picturesque East African Rift Valley.
Have a well-deserved lunch in Nairobi before finishing your journey to Amboseli National Park.
You will arrive in time for a brief evening game drive before heading to your lodge for checking in and a savory dinner for the family.
Take in incredible views of the distant Mount Kilimanjaro if the weather is clear. Rest and prepare for the next adventure.
Animals that can be encountered include buffalo, elephants, lions, rhinos, gazelles, zebras, and different bird species like turacos, spike-heeled larks, Von der Decken’s hornbills, and the yellow-necked spurfowl, among others.
Day 5: Amboseli National Park
This day will entirely be spent in the beautiful Amboseli National Park, dotted with amazing game drives in different sections of the park.
This will be after an exciting breakfast with the family before heading out to the rich savanna plains.
During these game drives, you will closely encounter the famous Mount Kilimanjaro, listed as the highest mountain on the African continent.
The majesty of this tropical mountain makes Amboseli and Kilimanjaro an ideal photographer’s haven.
From its splendid snow-capped peaks to the wildlife it supports, this place offers a spectacular background for wildlife and scenic photography.
Herds of elephants inhabit this swampy park, together with lions, cheetahs, buffaloes, warthogs, crocodiles, leopards, porcupines, and different species of antelopes.
The park is also home to interesting bird species such as the steel-blue whydah, Hartlaub’s turaco, white-bellied go-away bird, Rufous chatterer, and Rufous-bellied heron.
Day 6: Amboseli National Park to Tsavo West National Park
On your second last day, you will have an early morning game drive before coming back to a hearty breakfast waiting for you.
The game drive will probably also be your last opportunity to view Mount Kilimanjaro. After your family breakfast, you will enjoy one last game drive before you leave the park.
On your arrival in Tsavo, partake in your luscious lunch while having a good family get-together. After lunch, rest for some time before heading to the rhino sanctuary.
Be ready to observe some of the wildlife in the park on your drive to and from the rhino sanctuary.
Animals that can be encountered include hyenas, leopards, dik-diks, cheetahs, African wild dogs, buffaloes, elephants, zebras, lions, mongooses, giraffes, crocodiles, hyraxes, and lesser kudus.
Day 7: Tsavo West to Mombasa or Nairobi & End of Safari
After your family breakfast, check out of your lodge and head to the Mzima Springs. The Mzima Springs are a beautiful enormous pool of water created by an underground river with sources from Mount Kilimanjaro.
The pool forms a favorable home to various species like fish, crocodiles, and hippos. Guests can observe the different species from an underground observatory glass tank, giving you a different perspective from above the ground.
This is one memorable experience to have on your last day before departing from the park and heading back into town. Either drop off in Mombasa or Nairobi based on your preference.
You will have a beautiful family lunch en route. Arrive in the early evening, in time for your later departure flight, or settle in your lodge and wait for the next day. This will mark the end of your 7-day Kenya family safari.
